Porch Multifunctional Space

Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025

This retail environment employs spatial language that speaks fundamentally about threshold experiences and the archetypal human relationship to shelter, display, and curated encounter, the recurring arch motif functioning as primary symbolic vocabulary carrying dense cultural resonance across architectural history from ancient Roman aqueducts through Islamic courtyard architecture to Romanesque church portals, here the arch stripped to essential geometric purity through thin metal armatures becomes abstract signifier rather than structural necessity, suggesting passage, framing, elevation, and the gesture of gathering or protecting what lies beneath, the curved form throughout human building tradition marks sacred or significant zones, distinguishes valued spaces from mundane surroundings, and creates psychological emphasis through formal distinction, within retail semiotics the arch signals that merchandise beneath receives special consideration, positioned within metaphorical shrine or stage that elevates commercial objects toward aesthetic or cultural significance beyond mere commodity status. The chromatic strategy of warm terracotta flooring beneath cool white architectural envelope creates symbolic grounding literally and figuratively, terracotta carrying associations with earth, clay, human craft, ancient building traditions, Mediterranean and vernacular architecture, handwork, and organic materiality, this warm foundation suggesting authenticity, heritage, and connection to making traditions that predate industrial production, while the pale minimalist walls and contemporary metal elements assert present-moment design consciousness and urban sophistication, this material dialogue proposing retail experience rooted in craft values yet fully contemporary in execution and sensibility. The cylindrical display pedestals evoke ancient column drums, ceremonial platforms, or abstract sculptural forms, their tiered clustering suggesting informal gathering as in public plazas or market squares where exchange occurs within social framework rather than purely transactional environment, these rounded forms throughout design history signal accessibility and approach in contrast to sharp rectangular geometries that establish boundaries and separation, circles and cylinders in spatial language invite gathering and equal access from all directions, here translated to merchandising context they suggest democratic browsing without hierarchical approach paths. The integration of residential-scaled seating within commercial environment performs significant symbolic work, the comfortable lounge chair and ottoman signaling that this space acknowledges visitor needs beyond purchasing, offering rest, contemplation, and domestic comfort within retail context, this hospitality gesture traditionally associated with high-end boutiques and galleries where leisurely consideration receives priority over transaction velocity, the mid-century modern sculptural form of the seating references design history's democratic modernist impulse where beautiful functional objects should enhance everyday life across social strata, not reserved for elite consumption alone. Natural daylight filtered through sheer curtains carries symbolic weight as honest, unmanipulated illumination suggesting transparency, openness, and confidence in displayed merchandise which requires no artificial theatrical lighting to create appeal, the foliage shadows dancing on ceiling planes bring exterior natural rhythms into interior experience, connecting commercial space to larger cycles of weather, season, growth, and organic time that commerce often attempts to transcend or ignore, this gesture suggests values beyond pure commerce including environmental awareness, biophilic connection, and acknowledgment that human flourishing requires contact with natural patterns and living systems. The black metal frameworks and lighting elements provide graphic structure like calligraphic gestures or line drawings in space, black throughout color psychology and design tradition signifies sophistication, seriousness, luxury, and formal restraint, here deployed not as dominant presence but as accent and organizational device, creating visual scaffolding that orders experience without overwhelming, the minimalist industrial aesthetic of exposed metal suggesting honesty about construction and function rather than decorative concealment, aligned with contemporary values privileging authenticity and material transparency, the overall spatial composition suggests retail philosophy valuing considered selection, quality over quantity, enduring design over trend-driven consumption, and shopping as potentially meaningful cultural activity rather than purely acquisitive behavior, the environment proposing that commerce conducted within beautiful thoughtfully designed spaces enriched by natural light, authentic materials, and comfortable human-scaled proportions can transcend transaction to become encounter with aesthetic values, craft traditions, and design intelligence worthy of contemplation.

The designers faced a difficult task of blending traditional Iranian elements with the modern aesthetic, but still made it possible to create harmony in this multifunctional space. Gray and dark blue palettes were used together with naked finishes to create a modern background. While the old wooden floors were carefully preserved, they skillfully integrated modern looking mirrors and arches, which are a combination of traditional and contemporary architectural styles.
