Unbounded Office

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2024

Kris Lin's Unbounded Office functions as a spatial text encoding values of refined professionalism, cultural sophistication, and the integration of contemplative experience within productive environments. The bronze metallic finish dominating the display architecture carries associations of permanence, achievement, and accumulated value, traditionally linked to trophies, commemorative objects, and institutional authority. This chromatic choice positions the workspace within symbolic frameworks of success and established excellence while the warmth of the bronze tone softens these associations with approachability. The wood-grain ceiling elements introduce archetypal resonances of natural shelter, the protective canopy, and organic growth, counterbalancing technological sleekness with biophilic reference that speaks to fundamental human needs for connection to natural materials. The diagonal compositional thrust creates dynamic energy suggesting forward movement and progressive vision, while the vertical rhythm of shelving units provides stabilizing structure implying order, organization, and systematic thinking. The sculptural objects arranged within illuminated niches transform functional storage into shrine-like display, encoding values that position aesthetic appreciation alongside professional function, suggesting that the inhabitant of such space values beauty, culture, and contemplation as integral to work life rather than separate from it. The biomorphic forms of these objects, with their organic curves and flowing silhouettes, introduce symbolic counterpoint to architectural geometry, suggesting creativity, natural process, and the irreducibility of human imagination to purely rational frameworks. The layered spatial organization, with its progression from intimate foreground through middle zones to luminous background, may be understood as encoding a cosmological structure moving from immediate material presence toward transcendent openness, positioning the workspace as a threshold between mundane activity and aspirational possibility.

The project, targeting corporate spirit and real-world work requirements, amalgamates diverse functionalities such as office work, reception, meetings, tea tasting, collecting, resting, and fishkeeping. Adopting a Unbounded design concept and utilizing modern materials like mirrors and stainless steel, it aims to achieve an infinite extension and maximal continuity of space. This approach seeks to break away from the constraints of traditional closed offices, creating an open, multi functional working environment.
