Zhejiang Pinghu Sports Center

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2024

The sweeping ribbon form that defines FREDERIC ROLLAND ARCHITECTURE's Sports Center operates as a powerful spatial signifier within the symbolic vocabulary of contemporary civic architecture, its continuous unbroken flow potentially evoking themes of unity, cyclical return, and communal gathering that resonate deeply with the social functions of athletic venues across cultures. The ovoid or elliptical geometry, departing from the rigid orthogonality of utilitarian construction, may reference organic growth patterns, suggesting a facility that has emerged from rather than been imposed upon its landscape context, while the curvilinear forms activate archetypal associations with fluidity, adaptation, and natural processes. The tensile membrane canopy, rising in luminous white peaks above the grandstand, could be interpreted through multiple symbolic frameworks: as a protective gesture sheltering the gathered community, as an aspirational element reaching toward the sky, or as a reference to traditional tent and pavilion structures that have served as gathering places across nomadic and settled cultures alike. The chromatic organization carries its own symbolic weight, with the verdant green of the playing field traditionally associated with vitality, growth, and natural abundance, while the terracotta running track in its warm earth tones may evoke groundedness, athletic tradition, and the burnt sienna of ancient amphitheaters that served similar communal functions. The integration of substantial water features into the site composition introduces symbolic associations with reflection, purification, and the life-sustaining properties that make water a sacred element across virtually all cultural traditions. The elevated promenade encircling the entire facility functions architecturally as a unifying gesture, but symbolically it may represent themes of continuous journey, shared pathway, and the democratic principle of equal access to viewing and participation. The positioning of the stadium within its urban context, visible yet integrated with landscape buffers of water and mature trees, could suggest a meditation on the relationship between civic gathering and natural setting, between communal activity and contemplative retreat.

Pinghu Sports Center is adjacent to East Lake Park and close to Changsheng Road on the west side. The total land area is 146,204.13 m2, the building covers an area of 26,356.86 m2 after renovation and extension, with a total construction area of 24,440.19 m2. There are basketball, badminton, volleyball, tennis courts, football fields, and other sports fitness venues, which is a public sports infrastructure open to the citizens.
