Gothic arch symbolism carries profound spatial and psychological resonance within this hospitality environment, transforming dining into quasi-sacred experience through architectural metaphor. The pointed arch, historically associated with aspirational verticality and spiritual elevation in ecclesiastical contexts, here redirects its symbolic energy toward earthly pleasures of gathering, nourishment, and social communion, suggesting that contemporary hospitality design can create meaningful ritual spaces for secular celebration. The tripartite spatial recession through successive arched portals evokes journey narratives and threshold symbolism, with each arch marking passage into progressively more intimate zones, potentially referencing archetypal concepts of approach, arrival, and sanctuary. The golden latticed screen serving as visual terminus radiates warmth and light traditionally associated with divine presence, here perhaps suggesting culinary creativity or the transformative alchemy of the kitchen. Chromatic choices encode meaning through temperature and cultural association: the cool teal of leather seating suggests depth, calm, and sophistication while providing psychological grounding; cream and ivory tones of architectural surfaces evoke purity, welcome, and warmth; burgundy accents in distant seating suggest richness, celebration, and convivial pleasure. The presence of dried botanical elements introduces contemplation of natural cycles, preservation, and the beauty of transition, while celadon ceramics potentially reference historical craft traditions and the refinement of tea culture. The chevron pattern of wood flooring creates directional energy guiding movement and suggesting purposeful procession through the space. Integrated lighting delineating structural profiles transforms architecture into luminous drawing, emphasizing the human craft of space-making while creating theatrical atmosphere appropriate to the performative aspects of hospitality experience. The careful balance of intimate table arrangements within grand architectural gesture suggests the hospitality ideal of making guests feel simultaneously special and comfortable within impressive surroundings.
The main theme of the design is frontier spirit, a pioneer for the development of Sapporo, and the brewmasters, an important figure in the brewing of beer and one of the businesses of the pioneers. The two are set as the characters within the story of the design to create a subliminal atmosphere of the passion and exuberance of those days, and the artistic chaos of modernization, where Japanese and Western influences, past and future, are mixed together. The design aims to be a new base connecting Sapporo's past and future and to contribute to the further development of the region.
