2023 Hua Chenyu Mars Concert Stage

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

Peng Guo's 2023 Hua Chenyu Mars Concert Stage deploys a sophisticated vocabulary of spatial and luminous symbolism that transforms the concert environment into a site of collective transcendence and personal transformation. The deconstructed cubic arrangement of suspended screen panels evokes archetypal imagery of cosmic order emerging from primordial chaos, the fragmented geometric forms suggesting both explosion and crystallization, destruction and creation held in dynamic tension. The vertical emphasis of the convergent light beams activates ancient symbolic associations with aspiration, spiritual ascent, and the connection between earthly and celestial realms, their luminous shafts functioning as contemporary iterations of the axis mundi that appears across world mythologies as the cosmic pillar linking heaven and earth. The monochromatic figurative imagery displayed across the screen surfaces, with its multiplied and fragmented human forms, may be understood as exploring themes of identity, multiplicity, and the relationship between individual experience and collective consciousness, the single figure becoming many while remaining recognizably human. The color semiotics of the predominantly cool blue palette traditionally associate with depth, infinity, contemplation, and the transcendent, while the punctuating warm amber tones ground the celestial imagery in earthly warmth and human presence. The crowd silhouette at the composition's base functions as essential symbolic counterweight, representing the gathered community whose collective presence and attention activates the spectacular space, their raised arms echoing gestures of worship, celebration, and surrender found across cultural traditions. The atmospheric haze that renders light visible operates as symbolic intermediary, transforming empty space into palpable medium through which energy and meaning flow, suggesting the invisible made manifest through collective ritual participation.

The stage design for Huachenyu's 2023 Mars Concert was centered on the Martian Coordinate System, symbolizing both a geographical reference and the time and emotions shared over the past decade. The structure, a rectangular prism 47.5m x 27.5m x 22m, incorporated sequential luminous panels and mirror-like elements, resembling coordinate scales that documented key moments. With a four-sided stage weighing over 200 tons, the design balanced scale, transparency, and safety. Dynamic elements allowed sections to visually grow from saplings to flowers.
