Chen Yun Office

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

Jacky Zhang's Office employs spatial semiotics that position the corridor as a liminal threshold, a symbolic passage between exterior worldly engagement and interior contemplative sanctuary, drawing upon architectural phenomenology traditions that understand movement through space as potentially transformative experience. The integration of the rock garden installation activates deep cultural associations with meditative garden traditions, where stone and gravel arrangements function as microcosmic representations of natural landscapes intended to facilitate psychological centering and philosophical contemplation—the weathered stones suggesting permanence and elemental presence, the raked gravel evoking water or void, the delicate vegetation introducing temporal cycles of growth and seasonal change. The chromatic restraint of the neutral palette, punctuated by the vibrant yellow tulips, operates symbolically through traditional color associations: the warm timber tones suggesting natural authenticity and human warmth, the charcoal screens establishing gravitas and professional seriousness, while the yellow florals introduce solar symbolism associated with vitality, optimism, and creative energy within Eastern and Western traditions alike. The vertical orientation of the slatted screens creates ascending visual movement that may evoke aspirational themes, while their precise repetition suggests order, discipline, and systematic thinking appropriate to professional contexts. The threshold symbolism embedded in the elevated platform and traditional screen elements frames passage into deeper spaces as ceremonial transition, inviting occupants to leave behind external concerns and enter with renewed presence. The organic sculptural form of the contemporary chair introduces biomorphic vocabulary that humanizes the architectural precision, suggesting that designed environments might accommodate bodily comfort alongside visual refinement. The synthesis of traditional Eastern spatial references with contemporary Western design language creates a symbolic dialogue about cultural integration and the possibility of honoring heritage while embracing innovation.

Although the original contours of the building define the shape of the space, different forms of division endow the space with multiple possibilities at different times, overlapping functional slices magnify the small to dissolve the limitations of limited space usage. Therefore, the design revolves around autonomy and flexibility in work to develop the layout, integrating diverse office scene modes, blurring the boundaries between work, discussion, and leisure, releasing the potential of space in a dynamically flowing form.
