Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025
Architectural surfaces and spatial boundaries function as encoded communication about dwelling ideals, material values, and environmental relationships, the white rendered planar volumes evoke traditions of modernist purity and Mediterranean vernacular whitewash simultaneously, white carrying layered connotations of cleanliness, new beginning, spatial expansion through light reflection, and dematerialization, suggesting architecture that aspires toward platonic ideality while remaining materially grounded, the charcoal corrugated metal cantilever introduces contrasting symbolic vocabulary drawn from industrial building traditions and contemporary material honesty movements, dark surfaces traditionally suggesting weight and shadow here paradoxically employed on the floating projecting element creating semantic tension between expected gravity and achieved lightness, corrugated metal profiles reference agricultural structures, industrial sheds, and modernist explorations of humble materials elevated through refined application, the rhythm of corrugation introduces time-based dimension as light tracking across ribbed surface creates changing shadow patterns marking solar movement, transparency operates semiotically as perhaps architecture's most potent contemporary symbolic gesture, floor-to-ceiling glazing communicating openness, honesty, connection to landscape, and confidence in interior spatial quality worthy of revelation, transparency suggesting democratic accessibility and environmental responsibility through daylighting while simultaneously enabling visual possession of landscape, the strategic positioning of transparency at the middle level encodes hierarchical understanding of domestic programs with public living spaces granted maximum connection and private spaces above and below offered protective enclosure, horizontal emphasis through the cantilevered gesture and window banding evokes modernist spatial flow concepts and landscape connection, horizontal elements suggesting repose, groundedness, and integration with topography rather than vertical aspiration, the tripartite vertical division into base, middle, and crown follows classical organizational principles translated into contemporary material vocabulary, the substantial concrete retaining wall foundation suggests permanence, tectonic honesty about site engineering, and integration with geological strata, rough concrete texture contrasting with smooth architectural surfaces above distinguishes infrastructure from habitation, each material carrying distinct symbolic freight about appropriateness and hierarchy, geometric orthogonal clarity throughout the composition suggests rational ordering, human control over natural environment, and modernist faith in geometry as path toward ideal form, yet this geometric order remains punctuated and softened by preserved organic elements, the mature tree at right functioning symbolically as nature honored and integrated rather than erased, suggesting environmental sensitivity and temporal awareness, established trees representing previous occupation and future continuity beyond current architectural intervention, the cantilever itself operates as architectural archetype of technical achievement and spatial ambition, projecting volumes carrying connotations of confidence, structural mastery, and spatial generosity, the gesture of extension beyond supporting base suggesting abundance rather than constraint, hospitality through creating sheltered exterior space, and architectural theater through visible structural expression, chromatic restraint to near-monochromatic scheme with strategic dark accent communicates discipline, refinement, and confidence that form and space can carry meaning without chromatic elaboration, this palette suggesting affinities with Japanese aesthetic principles of material essentialism and controlled contrast, the fenestration pattern encodes interior functional organization legibly on exterior envelope, window size and placement functioning as symbolic indicator of program hierarchy and privacy needs, smaller openings suggesting service or intimate spaces, larger openings indicating public gathering and landscape engagement, the overall formal composition balancing assertive contemporary architectural expression with contextual restraint suggests negotiation between individual expression and collective responsibility, the design asserting distinctiveness within dense residential context while maintaining material restraint and volumetric discipline that respects neighboring structures, spatial layering through transparent middle register revealing interior surfaces and further spatial depth operates symbolically as architectural honesty about construction and invitation toward imagined occupation, viewers positioned as potential inhabitants mentally projecting themselves into revealed interior spaces, the integration of natural wood ceiling elements visible through glazing introduces warmth and organic material reference tempering predominantly inorganic palette, wood carrying archetypal associations with shelter, craft tradition, natural growth, and tactile domestic comfort, the elevated siting and resulting retaining wall infrastructure encode relationship to topography as partnership requiring substantial foundation investment, suggesting commitment to specific site rather than placeless generic architecture, the composition rewards contemplation of how material choices, formal gestures, and spatial organizations carry cultural meanings beyond functional necessity, inviting consideration of architecture as communicative medium expressing values about dwelling, landscape relationship, material honesty, structural expression, and environmental responsibility.
This design tackles a challenging site: narrow, steep, and with strict building limits. To maximize space within a 40% coverage rule, a three story mix of wood and concrete was implemented. The innovative wedge shape places living areas on the view rich second floor, with diminishing lower levels to ease retaining wall pressure. This design balances regulations, space, and scenic integration.
