Woodfire Collection Tableware

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

Luzerne Pte Ltd's Woodfire Collection Tableware functions as a sophisticated material vocabulary communicating values of authenticity, craft heritage, and grounded hospitality through carefully orchestrated design choices. The warm earth-tone palette ranging from pale ochre through burnt sienna to deeper umber operates within what material culture scholars might term a natural honesty spectrum, where colors associated with clay, soil, and organic matter communicate rootedness, nourishment, and connection to elemental processes. The reactive glaze surfaces, with their subtle tonal variations and organic movement, encode the symbolic values of handcraft authenticity and natural process, referencing the venerable traditions of wood-fired ceramics where flame, ash, and atmospheric chemistry collaborate with human intention to create unrepeatable surfaces. The shallow coupe forms and generous bowl profiles communicate abundance, receptivity, and the archetypal vessel function of holding and offering, while their graduated sizes suggest systematic order and professional consideration. The live-edge wooden surface upon which the collection rests establishes what might be understood as material sympathy or elemental kinship, linking fired earth with organic wood in a symbolic ecology of natural materials transformed by human skill for human use. The singular wine glass at compositional center introduces transparency and crystalline precision as counterpoint to ceramic opacity, perhaps encoding the civilizing rituals of shared wine and the refinement of hospitality traditions. The dried botanical element, bare and delicate, may evoke Japanese concepts of wabi-sabi beauty in impermanence, or seasonal consciousness honoring natural cycles, or simply the poetic recognition that all gathered moments are fleeting. The cream-white interior surfaces visible in several pieces function as a kind of framing device, preparing a neutral ground upon which presented foods might achieve visual prominence, encoding the professional consideration that the vessel exists in service to what it holds. The overall symbolic register suggests a design philosophy that honors material truth, celebrates craft heritage, and positions daily rituals of eating and gathering within contemplative appreciation for enduring human traditions of making and sharing.

From the silky rich soil of Dehua, China, emerges Woodfire, a new bone series inspired by the raw beauty of fired wood. Drawing from the timeless elegance of wood, each piece is a unique work of art that embodies the strength of fire-kissed timber. Woodfire captures the warmth and rustic charm of a cozy fireplace. The collection comes to life through a handcrafted, two-part reactive glaze that creates unique, organic patterns mimicking the effect of fire on wood. Presented in two rich colors, Dark Oak and Antique Pine, each exuding bold character as if reborn through the trial of fire.
