Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025
Organic geometry governs the symbolic landscape of Bean Buro's workplace design, with the undulating ceiling element functioning as an archetypal canopy—a universal symbol of shelter, protection, and gathering that appears across cultures from forest clearings to tent structures to vaulted sacred spaces. This biomorphic form suggests natural phenomena: cloud formations promising atmospheric blessing, water currents indicating life-giving flow, or perhaps the branching networks of mangrove ecosystems referenced in the project title—themselves powerful symbols of resilience, interconnection, and the productive threshold between distinct realms. The circular gathering table beneath operates as a contemporary hearth, the ancient archetype of communal focus translated into professional context, its cylindrical form embodying wholeness and equality among those who gather around it. The terracotta coloration carries rich associations: earth, clay, warmth, and the handmade traditions of ceramic vessels that have symbolized sustenance and hospitality across civilizations. The suspended acoustic element descending toward this table echoes sacred architecture's tradition of marking significant spaces with overhead emphasis—baldachins, domes, and ceremonial canopies that denote importance and focus attention. The abundant plant life functions beyond mere decoration as symbolic mediator between interior human culture and exterior natural systems, their verdant presence suggesting growth, renewal, and the ongoing cycles that sustain life. The repeating semicircular forms of the banquette backrests create a rhythmic visual language suggesting waves, scallop shells, or sunrise forms—all associated with emergence, possibility, and generative potential. The diagonal lattice screens reference traditional craft vocabularies while creating symbolic thresholds—permeable boundaries that suggest both privacy and connection, enclosure and openness. The palette of warm neutrals and earth tones grounds the space in material authenticity and natural reference, countering the potential alienation of corporate environments through chromatic choices that resonate with human evolutionary preferences for environments suggesting safety and resource abundance.
Bean Buro designed a 54,000 sq ft contemporary workspace for a global financial firm in Hong Kong, across three stores. The design integrates natural elements with a human centric approach, emphasizing wellbeing and hospitality. Each level features a hub akin to a mangrove garden that fosters social interaction. Art installations boost engagement and reflect local culture. Bespoke lighting and dynamic colors create an immersive, cohesive space. Sustainable practices are central, and the design successfully merges the client’s brand essence with modern aesthetics, setting new benchmarks.
