Julia Filippova's Tjeld Bar orchestrates a rich symbolic vocabulary through its material and formal choices, where the commanding vermillion column may be interpreted as an archetypal axis mundi, a world-pillar connecting earthly and celestial realms, its vertical thrust creating symbolic orientation within the horizontal social space of the bar environment. The circular illuminated elements positioned behind the counter activate solar and lunar symbolism, their warm amber glow suggesting hearth-fire, gathering light, and the ancient human association between circular forms and cosmic completeness, while their paired presentation evokes dualistic principles of balance and complementarity found across cultural traditions. The extraordinary ceiling installation of translucent, billowing material introduces cloud and breath imagery, suggesting transformation, impermanence, and the liminal space between material and ethereal realms, its gossamer quality evoking textile traditions associated with shelter, protection, and domestic comfort while simultaneously suggesting smoke, mist, and atmospheric phenomena that have long carried spiritual significance. The juxtaposition of rough-hewn stone and polished surfaces creates a dialogue between nature and culture, raw and refined, ancient and contemporary, encoding within the spatial experience broader meditations on human relationship to material transformation and craft traditions. The warm-cool chromatic opposition throughout the space may be understood as encoding fundamental dualities of energy and rest, passion and contemplation, solar and lunar principles, while the specific choice of vermillion carries associations with vitality, celebration, and auspicious beginnings found across numerous cultural traditions. The geometric repetition of circular forms, from column cross-section to illuminated fixtures, establishes visual rhythm while activating symbolic associations with wholeness, unity, and cyclical time, suggesting the recurring patterns of social gathering and convivial ritual that hospitality spaces traditionally facilitate and celebrate.
Tjeld Bar is a harmonious blend of nature and functionality. Inspired by the scenic Norwegian coast and the iconic Tjeld bird, this bar recreates the atmosphere of the shoreline through natural materials like marble, wood, and metal. Fluid interior lines echo oyster shells while glowing lamps reflect the watchful presence of the bird. A bold red column, representing the oystercatcher's beak, separates the cocktail and oyster stations. Ergonomic space planning and sustainable materials support comfort, functionality, and a strong connection to nature.
