Atlas Multifunctional Bed

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

The symbolic architecture of Harun Ayaydın's Atlas Multifunctional Bed operates through a rich vocabulary of form and material that communicates nurturing protection alongside emerging independence. The oak spindles, arranged in vertical repetition, function as a permeable threshold between the intimate sleeping realm and the wider room, their rounded profiles suggesting softened boundaries rather than rigid barriers, inviting passage rather than preventing it. Wood itself carries archetypal associations with organic growth, warmth, and natural cycles, its living grain patterns connecting the child to elemental forces while the white lacquered frame introduces associations of purity, clarity, and fresh beginnings. The spherical feet elevate the structure from the ground plane, a gesture that traditionally signifies transition and lightness, lifting the sleeper symbolically between earthly rest and imaginative flight. The surrounding environment enriches this symbolic field exponentially: the world map mural positions the sleeping child as future explorer, the continents spread before them like invitation rather than boundary, while hot air balloons and vintage aircraft suggest aspirational journey and the wonder of discovery. Animals distributed across the map invoke the diversity of life and the child's developing relationship with the natural world. The planetary rug beneath introduces cosmic scale, its orbital rings suggesting ordered systems within vast space, the colorful spheres representing bodies that dance in predictable yet wondrous patterns. Together, these elements construct a symbolic universe where rest and adventure coexist, where safety enables exploration, and where the intimate domestic space opens onto infinite possibility. The design communicates through material warmth and geometric clarity that childhood represents both sanctuary and launching point for lives of curiosity and connection.

The Atlas provides ergonomic usage conditions with its timeless design and over 15 years of experience. It is spacious enough to allow families to sleep next to their children if needed. It can also be used safely by mothers who use a bedside cradle during the newborn period. Additionally, it can be fitted with extra attachable safety barriers to ensure safety and comfort while supporting the child's independence. This product can be easily adapted for a teenager's room in the future, making it highly versatile for different stages of a child's life.
