Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025
Seven vertical portals rising in rhythmic succession carry profound spatial meaning, the arch form itself resonating across millennia of architectural tradition as threshold symbol, protective gesture, and structural expression simultaneously addressing practical spanning requirements and symbolic significance of passage, transition, and welcome into communal territory, here repeated with variation to suggest both institutional presence through monumentality and democratic accessibility through multiple entry points refusing singular hierarchical access. The undulating facade geometry encodes meanings of fabric, softness, organic form, and human tactility translated into permanent architectural material, suggesting care, shelter, embrace, and responsiveness rather than imposing rigid geometric authority, each concave fold reading as protective gesture catching inhabitants within its curve while the overall composition maintains institutional dignity through measured rhythm and substantial scale. Warm ochre and terracotta tones glowing within the arched openings carry universal associations with hearth, gathering, warmth, safety, and social congregation, colors traditionally linked to earth, clay, community ovens, shared meals, and domestic comfort now elevated to civic scale, suggesting the community center aspires to extend familial hospitality and domestic security into public realm where diverse populations might experience belonging and welcome regardless of background or circumstance. Cool neutral exterior envelope in cream and white traditionally signifies purity, clarity, openness, institutional authority, and civic permanence while also reflecting light and heat in practical environmental response, here the chromatic contrast between cool protective shell and warm inhabited core creates clear semiotic distinction between public-facing institutional presence and interior communal intimacy, the building expressing both civic gravitas and social warmth through its two-toned material narrative. Transparency through generous glazing systems within each arch democratizes the architecture by refusing opacity, allowing passersby to witness interior activity and community members to maintain visual connection with street life, encoding values of openness, accountability, inclusion, and permeable boundaries between institution and neighborhood, public and community, outside and inside, the visible circulation elements and gathered figures suggesting programmatic diversity and social vitality rather than singular prescribed use. The arcade typology referenced carries deep cultural memory across Mediterranean porticos, Asian covered walkways, and vernacular sheltered circulation systems that have historically provided climate-moderated public space, commercial congregation zones, social gathering areas, and transitional thresholds between private interior and public street, here reimagined through contemporary formal language while maintaining essential architectural generosity of these precedents. Rhythmic repetition with variation in the seven arches might invite numerological interpretation, seven carrying significance across multiple traditions as number of completeness, perfection, sacred cycles, and wholeness, though avoiding overly deterministic reading while noting that odd numbers generally create more dynamic compositions than even, and seven provides substantial presence without bilateral symmetry that would suggest rigid hierarchy. Vertical emphasis in the tall narrow proportions of each arch and the folded panel system establishes upward aspiration, dignity, and monumentality traditionally associated with civic and sacred architecture, elevating everyday community functions to cultural significance and suggesting that social infrastructure deserves architectural investment and expressive ambition comparable to historically privileged building types. Material expression suggesting smooth fabricated surfaces, precision detailing, and contemporary construction methodologies positions the design within current discourse around craft, technology, sustainability, and architectural innovation, the apparent sophistication of execution signaling institutional commitment and community value while the warm palette and accessible transparency prevent technological expression from reading as cold or exclusionary. Landscape integration through flanking deciduous trees introduces organic temporal cycles, seasonal change, and biophilic connection as counterpoint to architectural permanence, the autumnal tones suggesting design consideration of temporal dimensions and acknowledgment that community buildings exist within natural rhythms and environmental contexts that enrich rather than threaten architectural expression, the trees also providing human scale mediation between pedestrian realm and institutional building height while their golden-brown foliage echoes interior warmth to create chromatic continuity across built and natural elements.
Lilong Arcade thoughtfully blends traditional arcade architecture with modern design, creating accessible, versatile spaces tailored to community engagement. By carefully respecting historical context, the project enhances urban experiences and promotes social interactions, adaptability, cultural preservation, and vibrant public life within a contemporary urban setting.
