Terrasta Hotel

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

Uds Ltd.'s Terrasta Hotel employs the interior courtyard archetype that carries millennia of cultural significance as sacred threshold between domestic shelter and cosmic order, where the rectangular skylight aperture functions as an oculus connecting earthbound habitation to celestial realm, echoing traditions from the Roman compluvium through the East Asian tsuboniwa to contemporary light wells, the three trees rising through this opening may evoke sacred grove symbolism, their verticality creating axis mundi imagery linking underworld roots through human-scaled middle realm to heavenly canopy above, the stone composition below participates in the rich symbolic vocabulary of contemplative garden traditions where rocks represent mountains, islands, or cosmic permanence, while gravel suggests water, sea, or the void from which form emerges, coral and limestone fragments introduce oceanic associations connecting terrestrial garden to maritime origins, driftwood elements contribute narratives of journey, transformation, and the beautiful weathering that time bestows upon natural materials, the chromatic arrangement establishes meaningful contrasts between warm overhead shelter suggesting nurturing protection and cool mineral ground plane suggesting stable foundation, while verdant growth between them represents the vital life force that human dwelling seeks to cultivate and protect, the glass boundaries create symbolic transparency between functional zones while maintaining distinct spatial identities, the rectangular geometry throughout invokes rational order and human intention, yet the organic irregularity of stones, branches, and foliage introduces complementary principles of natural spontaneity and acceptance of imperfection, compositionally the centered garden creates mandala-like organization radiating outward from living heart to functional periphery, suggesting that contemplation of nature constitutes the essential purpose while sleeping, bathing, and working arrange themselves as supporting activities around this core, the overall spatial narrative proposes that hospitality at its highest form provides not merely shelter and comfort but opportunity for reconnection with natural rhythms and contemplative stillness.
