Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

Within the spatial language of ZHAO Zhifeng's hospitality design, the architectural insertion of gabled timber forms within the industrial shell activates archetypal associations with shelter, home, and the primordial dwelling. The house-within-a-building configuration may suggest the universal human longing for protective enclosure while simultaneously offering communal openness, encoding a spatial dialectic between private retreat and social gathering. The warm amber tones of the oak cladding carry cultural associations with craftsmanship, natural authenticity, and temporal continuity, while the illuminated shelving functions as a symbolic repository of knowledge and cultural transmission. The spherical pendant luminaires, with their perfect geometric forms, potentially evoke celestial bodies or pearls of wisdom, their descent on slender cords suggesting gifts offered from above. The exposed white steel trusses overhead may be read as an honest revelation of structural truth, celebrating rather than concealing the industrial heritage while their triangular geometries recall fundamental architectural archetypes of stability and aspiration. The cane-webbed furniture introduces material semiotics of traditional handcraft and organic connection, while circular rugs define sacred gathering zones, their rounded forms traditionally associated with wholeness, community, and egalitarian assembly. The suspended banners bearing botanical motifs and calligraphic elements function as cultural anchors, connecting the contemporary space to traditions of natural philosophy and written wisdom. Verdant landscape visible through apertures establishes a dialogue between interior sanctuary and external nature, potentially encoding themes of refuge, prospect, and the cultivated relationship between human habitation and the living world.

The Project on Lotus Island skillfully merges the pastoral charm with the idea of rural cooperative, offering an immersive agricultural tourism experience. Its design emphasizes sustainability and simplicity, blending nature with functional spaces. The use of hand-drawn visuals and natural materials creates a harmonious atmosphere, while the flexible layout, including terraces, reading areas, and tiered seating, fosters relaxation and social interaction. By balancing aesthetic appeal with practical functionality, the project provides visitors with an unique connection to nature and Community.
