Ripple of Knowledge Library

Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025

Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan's Library employs spatial morphology as symbolic language, with the eponymous ripple serving as the organizing conceptual metaphor that manifests across multiple scales and dimensions of the design, from the macro-level organization of furniture and circulation paths radiating outward from the curved reception desk to the micro-level detail of the vertical ribbing articulating that desk's surface, each instance reinforcing the core metaphor of knowledge as fluid phenomenon that emanates from sources and spreads in concentric waves of influence, touching successive individuals in patterns of expanding reach. The curved reception desk functions semiotically as threshold marker and symbolic generator simultaneously, its wavelike form suggesting both the spreading ripple pattern and the protective embrace of open arms, a dual signification encoding welcome and dissemination, reception and distribution, the library's role as both repository receiving knowledge and fountain from which it flows outward to nourish community understanding. The chromatic structure carries embedded spatial symbolism through its vertical temperature gradient, the cool blues concentrated in the ceiling zone evoking traditional associations with sky, heaven, aspiration, intellectual pursuit, contemplation, and the ethereal realm of ideas across multiple cultural contexts, while the warm timber tones grounding the lower register connect symbolically to earth, rootedness, natural growth, organic materiality, and human-scaled tactile engagement, this chromatic stratification encoding the library's mediating function between abstract knowledge and embodied human experience, between the infinite realm of recorded thought and the finite physical presence of individual readers. The exposed ceiling infrastructure reads as architectural semiotics of transparency and honesty, the deliberate choice to reveal rather than conceal mechanical and structural systems aligning with contemporary design values that associate visible construction with authenticity, democratic access to understanding, and resistance to mystification or obfuscation, the legible building systems metaphorically suggesting that knowledge systems too should remain transparent and accessible rather than hidden behind false facades. The horizontal window band positioned at upper wall level carries geometric symbolism of horizon and threshold, the boundary between interior sanctuary and exterior world, between artificial environment and natural cycles, these windows functioning as permeable membranes through which daylight and seasonal awareness penetrate, preventing the library from becoming hermetically sealed knowledge vault and instead maintaining connection to temporal flow and environmental context, the window placement encoding values of openness, connection, and integration rather than isolation or retreat. The modular open-cube shelving system operates as spatial vocabulary suggesting flexibility, non-hierarchical organization, democratic access where all knowledge categories receive equal architectural expression rather than some being monumentalized and others marginalized, and contemporary epistemological approaches that value interdisciplinary connection and fluid categorization over rigid classification schemes, the waist-height proportions ensuring visual democracy where no user regardless of height or physical ability encounters intimidating vertical barriers to browsing and discovery. The integration of digital screen technology alongside traditional book storage encodes the contemporary library's dual identity, acknowledging that knowledge now flows through multiple media channels, the screen's saturated blue chromatic echo of the ceiling color creating symbolic continuity between analog and digital information realms, suggesting these represent complementary rather than competing knowledge formats. The pale neutral flooring functions symbolically as tabula rasa or blank slate, the emptiness that precedes and welcomes inscription, its continuous unbroken surface suggesting the democratic commons where all community members share equal claim and access, while its speckled aggregate texture might read metaphorically as the accumulated deposit of many individual elements creating collective whole, each fleck representing individual knowledge contribution that together forms communal foundation. The spatial openness and visual transparency throughout encode Enlightenment values of reason, public knowledge, universal education, and democratic access that have historically motivated public library movements, the design refusing enclosed private study carrels or hierarchical spatial divisions in favor of a commons model where learning occurs through both individual contemplation and social witnessing, the visible presence of other readers and learners creating community of inquiry rather than isolated consumption, the architectural parti suggesting that knowledge multiplies through sharing rather than diminishing, that understanding spreads like ripples rather than being hoarded or contained, and that the library serves not as static repository but as active circulation system where information flows continuously outward, touching successive waves of seekers in patterns of expanding enlightenment and community enrichment.

Ripple of Knowledge is designed to spark children's curiosity and imagination, transforming the library into a dynamic space for creativity and learning. Inspired by the concept of ripples, the spatial design uses curved elements, low height cabinets, and flowing light to create an open, fluid, and inviting environment. The space encourages exploration, blending reading with interactive experiences. As children absorb knowledge, their ideas ripple outward, inspiring creativity and growth.
