Feel Ordinary Life Aromatic Candles

Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025

Chunyang Wang's aromatic candle design employs product semiotics that bridge culinary ingredient recognition and therapeutic wellness signification, creating layered meaning through material transformation and contextual reframing, the selection of garlic, ginger, and green onion as sculptural subjects carries rich symbolic freight across multiple cultural frameworks, these three ingredients function as fundamental building blocks in numerous culinary traditions particularly throughout East and Southeast Asian cooking where they comprise the foundational aromatic trinity often introduced first to hot oil to build flavor foundations, garlic historically symbolizes protection, vitality, strength, and purification across Mediterranean, European, and Asian traditions, its pungent sulfurous compounds believed to ward off illness, evil influences, and physical ailments while promoting cardiovascular health and immune function, ginger traditionally represents warmth, stimulation, digestive harmony, and healing energy, its heating qualities in traditional medicine systems addressing cold conditions while its anti-inflammatory properties support physical comfort and wellbeing, green onion or scallion symbolizes renewal, fresh beginnings, and vital energy, its quick growth cycle and persistent regeneration from root cuttings suggesting resilience and abundance, by transforming these humble kitchen staples into sculptural candle forms the design elevates quotidian ingredients into objects of contemplation and aesthetic appreciation, suggesting that healing and comfort reside within accessible everyday materials rather than exotic rare substances, the color symbolism proves equally significant with the periwinkle blue packaging functioning as chromatic bridge between calming blue associated with tranquility, trust, depth, and stability across most cultural contexts and mystical violet connected to spirituality, intuition, transformation, and elevated consciousness, this particular hue avoids the clinical sterility of pure white medical environments while eschewing the expected spa green that might seem predictable within wellness categories, the matte black of the sculptural candles reads simultaneously as sophisticated minimalism, absolute presence through light absorption, and the void or emptiness from which possibility emerges, black's associations with night and darkness connect appropriately to evening rituals, sleep preparation, and the restorative darkness necessary for rest, the concrete gray cubic elements introduce material honesty and industrial authenticity suggesting substance, permanence, and foundational stability while their circular apertures echo pharmaceutical precision and measured dosage, this visual reference to medicine packaging creates symbolic connection between natural botanical remedies and scientific efficacy without requiring explicit medical claims, the compositional structure itself encodes meaning through vertical aspiration suggesting elevation of consciousness and rising above discomfort, the stacked arrangement implies progressive stages or cumulative effects, while the stable horizontal foundation suggests grounded practical application, the three-part therapeutic categorization addressing pain, anxiety, and sleep represents fundamental human challenges transcending cultural specificity, these universal experiences of physical discomfort, mental distress, and rest disruption affect all humans regardless of background making the product proposition broadly accessible, the transformation of cooking ingredients into aromatherapeutic delivery systems suggests symbolic metamorphosis from external nourishment providing physical sustenance to internal nourishment supporting emotional and psychological wellbeing, this shift from consumption by eating to consumption by burning, from flavor experienced through taste to scent experienced through olfaction, from kitchen utility to bedroom or living space ritual, repositions familiar materials within new experiential frameworks, the design invites consideration of how contemporary wellness culture increasingly seeks healing modalities that feel authentic, accessible, and rooted in tangible natural materials rather than abstract or pharmaceutical interventions, the sculptural precision in capturing botanical morphology demonstrates respect for the inherent beauty of plant forms, suggesting that healing power resides within natural structures themselves, the overall visual identity communicates approachable sophistication rather than exclusive luxury, suggesting wellness practices available to ordinary life as the brand name explicitly states rather than requiring extraordinary circumstances or resources, the work ultimately proposes that therapeutic sanctuary can be constructed from the most humble familiar ingredients, that emotional regulation and physical comfort are not distant aspirational goals but immediately accessible through intentional engagement with thoughtfully designed sensory experiences drawing upon materials already present within everyday domestic contexts, the candles function symbolically as bridges between mundane and sacred, between kitchen and sanctuary, between cooking and healing, between ordinary and extraordinary, suggesting that transformation of consciousness requires not exotic interventions but rather fresh perspective on familiar elements, this philosophical proposition aligns with broader contemporary movements toward mindfulness, slow living, and finding meaning within simple daily rituals rather than constantly seeking external novelty or escape.

Inspired by the ubiquitous ingredients of Chinese cuisine, ginger, garlic, and scallions, this scented candle reimagines these familiar forms into a unique and artistic olfactory experience. By blending traditional Chinese culture with contemporary design, we have created a product that offers a feast for both the eyes and the nose. For example, the ginger shaped candle features a blend of floral and fruity notes, while the scallion shaped candle offers a woody and floral combination. This unexpected pairing of scents and forms creates a truly unforgettable sensory experience.
