Panlong Tiandi Mtpt Retail Store

Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025

Wood's universal material resonance carries deep cultural significance spanning building traditions worldwide, its presence in this retail environment potentially evoking archetypal associations with natural shelter, craft heritage, sustainable resource stewardship, and organic connection opposing industrial alienation, the extensive timber surfaces functioning as material signifier of environmental consciousness and design values prioritizing warmth over clinical modernist coolness. The honey-amber chromatic range traditionally associates with autumn harvest abundance, preserved food stores, contained sunlight, domestic comfort, and accessible luxury, positioned between precious golden tones and common brown earthiness, suggesting approachable refinement and comfortable prosperity. The diagonal grain patterns visible across ceiling planes create subtle dynamic energy through directional flow, diagonal orientations traditionally carrying movement connotations and visual activation compared to static horizontal-vertical relationships, potentially suggesting progress, forward momentum, and contemporary vitality while the repetitive linear rhythm establishes order and measured regularity. The curved sculptural display column housing emerald digital screen embodies fascinating material dialogue between organic biomorphic form language and technological function, the protective cylindrical wrap suggesting archetypal enclosure, embrace, or presentation gestures, while the vivid green chromatic accent carries layered symbolic freight: green's universal associations with growth, renewal, vitality, nature, harmony, and balance, plus contemporary digital-age coding where green frequently signals active status, positive confirmation, environmental consciousness, and innovation. The integration of living greenery visible through transparent boundaries extends biophilic symbolism beyond material reference toward actual ecological connection, windows functioning as threshold elements mediating interior commercial realm and exterior natural world, transparency itself carrying symbolic weight suggesting honesty, openness, accessibility, and refusal of commercial opacity. The conical pendant light form references industrial typologies and mid-century functional design vocabularies, inverted cone or funnel shapes suggesting focused energy, directed attention, and purposeful illumination descending from above, while black finish provides grounding weight and contemporary sophistication avoiding precious metal finish that might suggest luxury exclusivity. Vertical columns supporting horizontal ceiling planes enact fundamental architectural grammar of post-and-beam construction, this elemental structural expression potentially evoking archetypal shelter forms and honest tectonic clarity where forces and support remain legible rather than concealed. The spatial layering creating foreground-middleground-background progression with increasing transparency toward exterior establishes journey metaphor and discovery narrative, retail environments functioning as curated paths through material culture where spatial sequence shapes experience and meaning-making. The restrained neutral palette punctuated by singular chromatic accent demonstrates contemporary minimalist design philosophy where abundance comes through spatial quality and material refinement rather than decorative proliferation, this restraint potentially signaling contemporary luxury codes emphasizing curation, editing, and discernment over maximalist display. The polished floor surface providing subtle reflectivity creates grounding plane while doubling the visual field through mirroring, reflective surfaces traditionally carrying symbolic associations with contemplation, self-awareness, truth revelation, and dimensional multiplication. The integration of natural light as primary illumination source beyond functional necessity carries symbolic dimension suggesting transparency, vitality, circadian connection, environmental responsibility, and experiential quality prioritizing human comfort within commercial transaction spaces, daylight functioning as democratic resource equally available rather than controlled theatrical lighting establishing hierarchical drama. Retail architecture's increasing incorporation of residential material vocabularies, natural elements, and spatial generosity potentially signals evolving commercial paradigms where shopping environments aspire toward community gathering functions and lifestyle inspiration beyond pure merchandise transaction, spaces designed to invite dwelling and relationship building rather than efficient purchasing alone.

This project is located in Panlong Tiandi, in the northeastern part of Xujing Town, Qingpu District, Shanghai. The space combines the profound cultural heritage of Panlong Ancient Town with the characteristics of Mtpt products, using materials, shapes, sounds, and light and shadow to blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, artificial and natural, with the theme of Touching Nature, allowing the beauty of nature to enter within the space and achieving a symbiotic fusion between architecture and landscape.
