Park Wellstate Nishiazabu Senior Residence

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

Ascending verticality within this architectural composition encodes aspirational symbolism deeply resonant with the building's purpose as a senior residence, where the tower's upward reach may be interpreted as an affirmation of continued growth, dignity, and transcendence throughout life's later chapters. The material vocabulary establishes a meaningful symbolic dialogue between earthly groundedness and celestial aspiration, with warm timber and stone at human scale suggesting shelter, tradition, and tactile comfort rooted in natural material authenticity, while the crystalline tower above employs glass and metal to capture sky, light, and the ephemeral qualities of atmosphere. This vertical transition from dense, warm materials to transparent, light-filled surfaces potentially evokes the philosophical journey from material existence toward spiritual lightness found across contemplative traditions. The abundant spring foliage framing the composition carries rich symbolic resonance with renewal, vitality, and the cyclical nature of natural time, offering residents visual and psychological connection to seasonal rhythms that orient human experience within larger natural patterns. Green, across numerous cultural traditions, symbolizes growth, hope, health, and paradise, making its prominent presence particularly meaningful within a residential context devoted to wellbeing in later life. The low-angle perspective positions the viewer in a stance of appreciation and respect, looking upward toward the architecture in a manner that affirms its aspirational qualities while the encircling trees create a sense of protective embrace. The horizontal fenestration rhythm suggests order, calm, and measured progression, potentially evoking the regular rhythms of daily life and the comfort of predictable pattern. The crown element finished in warm timber creates symbolic completion, suggesting both shelter and honor at the composition's apex. The interplay between geometric architectural precision and organic natural forms embodies a design philosophy valuing both human ordering intelligence and humble integration within larger ecological contexts, proposing that architecture for aging can celebrate life's fullness through thoughtful material, spatial, and symbolic choices.

This is a residence for seniors aged 65 and over in Japan, where the population is rapidly aging. Although it is located in the densely populated city center of Tokyo, there are few tall buildings in the surrounding area, so residents can enjoy views of the night view and distant mountains from the 125m high-rise building. As the elderly residents spend most of their lives on the premises, a living environment has been created in which they can experience greenery, water, light, and wind, and feel the changes of nature.
