Curved Chair

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

Natural material and continuous curvilinear form converge in Beijing Forestry University's Curved Chair to communicate profound cultural and philosophical values through the language of functional design. The choice of bamboo or rattan as primary material carries deep symbolic resonance within East Asian cultural frameworks, where these plants traditionally represent flexibility combined with strength, the capacity to bend without breaking that Confucian and Taoist philosophy celebrates as essential virtue. The continuous looping structure of the leg and armrest assembly embodies the principle of cyclical flow fundamental to traditional cosmological understanding, where energy moves in perpetual circulation rather than linear progression, and endings curve back to become new beginnings. The fan-shaped backrest evokes multiple archetypal associations, suggesting both the protective shell and the radiating sunrise, forms that speak to shelter and renewal simultaneously. Numerologically, the repetition of parallel slats creates rhythm without terminus, implying continuity and the interconnection of discrete elements within unified wholes. The warm amber coloration activates associations with sunlight, harvest, and nourishment, positioning the chair as an object of comfort and sustenance rather than mere utility. The dramatic parabolic curves describe forms found throughout nature, from the trajectories of water in fountains to the growth patterns of climbing vines, embedding the designed object within networks of organic reference that suggest harmony between human making and natural process. The absence of visible joints or hardware communicates values of material honesty and craft integrity, where strength emerges from understanding material properties rather than mechanical intervention. Compositionally, the interplay between the structured regularity of the backrest slats and the freely flowing curves below may suggest balance between order and spontaneity, discipline and expression, tradition and innovation.

This rattan chair integrates aesthetic appeal, practicality and cultural essence. Crafted from the natural material, it cleverly marries traditional craftsmanship with modern design, which adopts gracefully curved rattan lines to reproduce a lively, harmonious scene of mountains and water intertwined, thereby creating a serene atmosphere with profound cultural significance. The product is not only a practical choice for home use, but also an expression of a peaceful attitude towards life, spicing up the space with the beauty of nature and the charm of culture.
