Leighton Residential Apartment

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

Spatial phenomenology within Ray Cheng's The Leighton Hill Residential Apartment reveals sophisticated encoding of dwelling archetypes through material, form, and atmospheric orchestration. The chevron floor pattern, historically associated with European aristocratic interiors, carries connotations of refined taste and permanence while its directional energy symbolically suggests forward movement and progression through life's passages. Bronze mesh screens function as threshold markers, embodying the archetypal significance of permeable boundaries that simultaneously connect and separate, their transparency suggesting honesty and openness while their physical presence acknowledges the necessity of sanctuary and retreat. The circular form repeated in the nested coffee tables evokes wholeness, completion, and the cyclical nature of domestic ritual, positioned at the gravitational center of the social space where gathering and communion occur. Forest-green leather, drawing associations with natural abundance, stability, and renewal, grounds the composition in earth element symbolism, while the pristine white orchids ascending from their vessels suggest aspiration, purity, and the cultivation of beauty through attentive care. The curvilinear ceiling element traces pathways of movement and pause, its organic line countering the orthogonal discipline of architectural enclosure to suggest that within structured order, fluidity and grace remain possible. Vertical ribbing appearing across multiple surfaces establishes rhythmic repetition that may symbolically evoke the passage of time, the regularity of daily ritual, or the reassurance of pattern and predictability within the domestic realm. Living plants positioned near natural light sources affirm connection to biological cycles and seasonal change, introducing memento vitae elements that celebrate growth and vitality. The overall atmospheric proposition suggests sanctuary, a protected realm where beauty, comfort, and order provide respite from external complexity, inviting inhabitants to experience dwelling as aesthetic practice and daily life as occasion for appreciation.

The house is located in Happy Valley, Hong Kong, a place rich in historical value. In the same place, in the same house, several generations live together. New and old cultures gather in the same space. A harmonious space is the solution to connect each other. Mahjong which is an enduring game, is added to build this kind of multi functional space to connect these generations, increase interaction and communication, use simple design techniques, pay attention to craft skills details, and create a comfortable living environment.
