Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025
DA Architects's NN Pharmaceutical Office Design operates within rich symbolic territories connecting ancient gathering traditions with contemporary wellness discourse through carefully orchestrated spatial and material choices. The stepped seating configuration carries archetypal resonance with the amphitheater, a spatial typology historically associated with democratic assembly, shared knowledge transmission, and collective experience, suggesting that pharmaceutical work involves collaborative intellectual exchange rather than isolated individual effort. Oak timber, with its deep cultural associations across numerous traditions including strength, longevity, and natural wisdom, establishes a symbolic foundation of reliability and organic connection, potentially referencing the natural origins of pharmaceutical research while grounding high-technology enterprise in earthly materiality. The triadic cushion color arrangement of coral, sage, and grey may encode symbolic meaning through chromatic association: coral suggesting vitality, health, and life force; sage evoking healing herbs, wisdom, and natural remedies; grey providing professional neutrality and scientific objectivity. Spherical pendant luminaires function as celestial symbols, their globe forms and warm luminescence suggesting enlightenment, intellectual illumination, and the pursuit of knowledge that guides pharmaceutical innovation. The prominent integration of living plants throughout the grid shelving carries obvious biophilic symbolism, representing growth, renewal, and the interconnection between human health and natural systems, while potentially encoding references to botanical medicine traditions that precede contemporary pharmaceutical science. The curved LED element visible in the corridor introduces a contemporary gestural quality suggesting forward momentum, innovation, and the arc of scientific progress, its sinuous form contrasting with surrounding orthogonality to symbolize creative thinking within structured research frameworks.
The project for the new NN office in Sofia aims to transform the working structure of the Bulgarian branch of Dutch pharmaceutical leader by creating a more efficient environment that stimulates collaboration and teamwork. To achieve this, the designers created a contemporary office that provides the necessary spaces for interaction between employees, combined with zones where one can feel comfortable and cozy, like in their own personal space. This ensures a smooth transition to working in open spaces with a flexible approach to utilizing the various zones by each employee.
