Work at Nagasaki Office

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

Spatial symbolism within this interior design by Mitsuhiro Shoji encodes a sophisticated meditation on threshold experiences and the duality of professional life through its architectural vocabulary. The monumental wood-clad column functions as an axis mundi, a world pillar connecting earthly foundation to overhead realm, while simultaneously serving as a symbolic marker between the informal lounge zone and the formal conference territory beyond. The mirrored ceiling plane introduces cosmological doubling, an ancient architectural device suggesting the principle of correspondence between upper and lower realms, here translated into contemporary material language to create psychological expansiveness within finite volume. The organic-edged stone table reads as a primordial form, its irregular profile and fossil-like surface markings suggesting geological time scales that contextualize human activity within deeper natural rhythms. Terra cotta hues dominating the conference table carry archetypal associations with earth, craftsmanship, and the transformative power of fire in ceramic traditions, suggesting that the work conducted here involves creative transformation. The warm amber illumination washing the figured walnut panels evokes the symbolic warmth of hearth and home, domesticating the corporate environment with resonances of shelter and belonging. The nocturnal cityscape visible through expansive glazing positions this interior as an illuminated sanctuary within darkness, a vessel of light and warmth against the cool vastness beyond. The triadic organization of spaces from intimate foreground lounge through transitional middle ground to formal conference destination creates a processional sequence encoding hierarchies of formality and function while maintaining visual and psychological connection throughout the unified environment.

Located in the heart of Nagasaki's old city center and its rich natural surroundings, Work at Nagasaki is a workplace that blends the grandeur of the natural landscape with a contemporary work style. This next generation co-working space, which is based on the theme of incorporating the changing landscape over time, is a creative space that emerges with a sense of floating in the elegant nature of Nagasaki's landscape and urban materials, blending them together beautifully.
