Xiangcheng Paradise Walk Shopping Mall

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2025

Shen Junwei's architectural composition encodes profound symbolic narratives through its formal vocabulary of flowing curves and ascending spatial sequence. The organic balcony ribbons may evoke traditional associations with natural water elements, suggesting rivers, streams, or cascading waterfalls that have long symbolized abundance, prosperity, and the continuous flow of fortune in various cultural traditions. The spiral upward movement toward the crown skylight potentially references archetypal ascension imagery found across world cultures, where vertical progression symbolizes aspiration, enlightenment, and spiritual elevation. The dominant white palette carries rich connotative weight, traditionally associated with purity, clarity, new beginnings, and the celestial realm, transforming commercial space into something approaching sacred architecture. The central void functions as a symbolic heart or gathering nucleus, recalling the ancient agora or forum as centers of communal life, suggesting that commerce exists within broader social and cultural frameworks. The organic skylight aperture operates as an oculus or eye, potentially symbolizing illumination, divine observation, and connection between earthly and heavenly realms. The checkerboard floor pattern invokes traditional symbolic associations with duality, balance, and the interplay of opposing forces, grounding the ethereal white architecture in terrestrial reality. The integration of nature through daylight penetration suggests biophilic principles that acknowledge human psychological need for natural connection. The parametric curves themselves may reference contemporary cultural values of innovation, technological sophistication, and forward-looking optimism, encoding the aspirational qualities associated with progress and modernity.

The challenge for the designers was to create a modern eco fashion shopping center in the classical garden city of Suzhou. The design concept for this project, dancing waters in forested streams, blends the elegance of Suzhou's garden waters with the natural waters of Xiangcheng. It transitions from calm to lively to energetic. The project features an experiential space on its upper floors called Moon Island. This area highlights the project's new social and experiential formats.
