The triangular form repeated throughout PepsiCo Design and Innovation's Doritos x Empirical Nacho Cheese Spirit Influencer Kit activates powerful archetypal associations with aspiration, transformation, and elemental fire, the triangle pointing upward traditionally symbolizing masculine energy, ambition, and spiritual ascent, while the inverted orientation employed here suggests receptivity, the feminine principle, and the alchemical vessel of transmutation. This geometric consistency creates what brand semioticians might term a visual throughline, encoding coherence and intentionality at the subliminal level. The pyramidal container references ancient monumental architecture associated with preservation, timelessness, and sacred treasures worthy of elaborate housing, elevating the contents from mere product to ritual object. The chromatic triad of red, black, and gold operates within deeply encoded cultural registers: red communicating passion, appetite, and vital energy; black suggesting sophistication, mystery, and the premium tier; gold signifying value, celebration, and alchemical perfection. In 2023, Doritos was looking for another unexpected use for Nacho Cheese. Coincidentally, flavor company Empirical came to Doritos with a new angle on its flagship flavor: a Nacho Cheese infused spirit. The limited release sold out in less than six hours. It has made its way into a variety of products: dips, popcorn, and more.
