Mountain Dew Hard Dew 2024 Beverage - Alcoholic

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2025

Dragon and serpent iconography present in this packaging design carries profound cross-cultural symbolic weight, these creatures traditionally embodying primal forces of nature, transformation, and elemental power across both Eastern and Western mythological traditions, though their specific connotations differ meaningfully between cultural contexts. The green-scaled variant dominating the central position may reference associations with growth, vitality, and natural abundance, while its flame accents invoke transformation and the alchemical principle of fire as catalyst for change, appropriate symbolic territory for a beverage promising energetic experience. The aquatic blue variants flanking the central figure introduce water element symbolism suggesting refreshment, depth, and the cool satisfaction of thirst quenched, the temperature associations of cerulean and teal reinforcing the sensory promise at symbolic as well as perceptual levels. Shield cartouches framing the primary typography invoke heraldic tradition, suggesting noble lineage and established authority within the visual hierarchy, while lightning bolt motifs carry accumulated cultural meaning around energy, instantaneous power, and electrical vitality that has been leveraged in commercial visual communication for over a century. The triangular arrangement of three vessels activates trinitarian compositional symbolism suggesting completeness and balanced wholeness, while the illuminated circular platform beneath evokes mandala traditions and the archetypal significance of radiant circles as symbols of wholeness, enlightenment, and contained energy. The integration of tropical botanical elements, particularly hibiscus-like flowers, introduces associations with paradise, exotic locale, and natural flavor origins, softening the fierce creature imagery with suggestions of sweetness and refreshment. The dark theatrical staging suggests initiation or revelation, objects emerging from shadow into luminous presence, inviting the viewer into a moment of discovery and anticipation that positions the beverage as bearer of transformative experience.

Channeling the iconic Mtn Dew energy, the designers set the sights on a new adult oriented avatar that could extend the attitude to Hard Dew. The lively U.S. design took inspiration from biker tattoos, a jumping off point for the Asia-Pacific design, which landed on another popular tattoo design: dragons. In bright blue and glimmering green, the fierce, fantastical creature helped add some fire to the new ready to drink alcoholic beverage. For passionate Dew drinkers with a taste for fun, designers redefined the meaning of Do the Dew by giving adults the chance to say hard yes to Hard Dew.
