Golden A' Design Award Winner 2025
Yingsong Brand Design's Moutai Shengyue Flying Fairy Packaging operates as a sophisticated cultural codex wherein the feitian or flying celestial figure functions as the primary symbolic vehicle, drawing upon Buddhist artistic traditions where these beings served as intermediaries between terrestrial and divine realms, their presence signifying blessings, celebration, and the transmission of sacred gifts. The flowing ribbon motifs that dominate both surfaces carry layered meanings within traditional iconography, representing the breath of heaven, the movement of cosmic energy, and the eternal dance of celestial beings that accompanies auspicious occasions. The chromatic foundation of deep vermillion activates associations with vitality, celebration, fortune, and the warming essence of fire, while the contrasting ultramarine and cobalt passages suggest water, sky, and the cooling balance necessary for harmony. The stringed instrument held by the apsara references the tradition of celestial musicians whose melodies were believed to accompany enlightened souls and mark moments of transcendence, positioning the act of opening this package as participation in sacred festivity. Circular medallions positioned near the apex of each element invoke solar symbolism and the perfection of heaven, their golden coloration amplifying associations with precious substance and imperial refinement. The vertical calligraphic elements function as cultural anchors, their brushwork carrying the weight of scholarly tradition and the transmission of meaning across generations. The desert landscape staging situates the design within historical memory of trade route exchange, suggesting cultural continuity and the movement of precious goods across vast distances. Numerologically, the pairing of bottle and box creates dyadic harmony, suggesting complementary forces in balance. The ascending diagonal movement of the flying figure against the stable vertical format creates dynamic tension between aspiration and groundedness, between celestial transcendence and earthly celebration.
Moutai Shengyue Flying Fairy is a packaging design for a Chinese baijiu liquor. The design draws on the Flying Fairy figures painted in the Dunhuang murals, in particular the music god in Cave 401 of the Mogao Grottoes, shown holding a sheng instrument with a graceful posture. The main color is crimson yarn, a traditional Chinese color, and the metal bottle cap pattern is made with a traditional enamel technique. The box opens from the right side and holds a two layered cloud pattern structure inside. The set measures 140 by 105 by 280 millimeters and uses paper, ceramics and metal.
