Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025
Tomi Rantasaari's Transformation Of Electrical Voltages embodies materiality as cultural language, the oxidized metal skin functioning as temporal narrative, weathered steel suggesting industrial heritage, manufacturing legacy, infrastructural continuity across decades, the warm oxidation palette ranging from burnt sienna through golden amber represents transformation itself, base metal elevated through environmental interaction into chromatic richness, the alchemical metaphor resonates, common industrial material achieving aesthetic dignity through time and exposure, the perforated constellation pattern activates archetypal stellar symbolism, the night sky brought to earth, cosmic order miniaturized and contained within orthogonal geometry, human control over natural patterns, each punctiform aperture becomes a singular point of emission suggesting the discrete distribution of energy nodes, the title's reference to electrical transformation literalized through light itself as visible energy manifestation, the cubic form carries symbolic weight across traditions, the perfect platonic solid representing earth element, material stability, grounded presence, four-square foundation, the architectural cube historically associated with treasury buildings, strongholds, contained precious resources requiring protection, here that protected resource manifests as electrical infrastructure, energy storage or transformation literally housed within geometry symbolizing security and permanence, the elevated platform functions as plinth or pedestal, ancient device for conferring significance, lifting sacred or honored objects above profane ground into visibility and dignified presentation, this infrastructural element receives ceremonial treatment traditionally reserved for monuments and memorials, suggesting cultural revaluation of utility systems as worthy civic expressions deserving aesthetic consideration, the internal illumination operates symbolically as revelation, hidden systems made visible, technological infrastructure acknowledged rather than concealed, the lantern typology evokes guidance, orientation, safe harbor, lighthouse logic transplanted to urban electrical systems, the warm color temperature approximating firelight or candlelight connects contemporary electrical systems to ancient human relationship with controlled flame as source of warmth, protection, community gathering, the twilight timing proves symbolically charged, threshold moment between states, transitional liminal zone where transformation occurs, day surrendering to night, solar yielding to artificial illumination, natural systems giving way to human technological intervention, the naturalistic planting integration suggests reconciliation between industrial and organic, technology nested within ecological context rather than opposed to it, the urban waterfront or post-industrial siting invokes transformation at landscape scale, formerly productive industrial zones reimagined as public amenity and ecological restoration, infrastructure persisting but reframed within different value systems, the distant skyline functions as contextual reminder of human constructed environment, the singular illuminated cube standing between organic foreground and urban background mediating natural and built realms, geometric perfection bridging irregular living systems and repetitive architectural forms, the overall composition proposes infrastructure as meditation subject, essential invisible systems given material expression inviting contemplative engagement, technical necessity elevated into aesthetic experience, suggesting expanded cultural appreciation for engineering as creative discipline and functional beauty as legitimate territory for design attention.
The Node project redefines the traditional transformer substation as a seamlessly integrated urban infrastructure element, combining functionality with refined aesthetics. Designed for both park and city settings, the structure remains fully enclosed with no visible openings, prioritizing electrical safety and security. As dusk falls, soft, warm interior lighting enhances its presence, turning the substation into a visually captivating urban landmark.
