Golden A' Design Award Winner 2025
Hao Zhong's tower design operates within rich symbolic territories where vertical aspiration meets organic metamorphosis, encoding meanings that resonate across architectural, natural, and spiritual interpretive frameworks. The spiraling façade motif activates archetypal associations with growth, ascent, and cyclical renewal found across cultures in spiral staircases of sacred architecture, the double helix of life's fundamental structure, and the phyllotactic arrangements governing leaf distribution in botanical specimens. This spiral vocabulary suggests an architecture that grows rather than merely rises, embodying vitality and organic becoming rather than static monumentality. The tapered silhouette references ancient precedents from obelisks to minarets to Gothic spires, forms historically encoding communication between earthly and celestial realms, material and spiritual domains. The warm golden materiality carries connotations of preciousness, solar energy, and harvest abundance, while the interwoven cool glazing introduces complementary associations with transparency, reflection, and openness to surrounding context. The waterfront positioning and mirrored reflection activate threshold symbolism, the tower standing at the liminal boundary between solid land and fluid water, between grounded presence and ethereal reflection. The colonnade podium references classical architectural vocabulary of public gathering and civic dignity, grounding the soaring tower in democratic accessibility. Numerologically, the continuous spiral suggests infinity and eternal return, while the singular tower form embodies unity and focused aspiration. The interplay between structural diagonal members and smooth surface panels may be read as encoding the complementary relationship between skeleton and skin, framework and enclosure, rational structure and sensory experience. This architecture ultimately symbolizes reconciliation between technological capability and natural wisdom, proposing that human building might honor organic principles while reaching toward unprecedented heights of achievement and aspiration.
The Spira Silva, in Williamsburg's redeveloped waterfront, envisions a vibrant, eco conscious future by integrating nature with urbanism. Unlike traditional timber buildings, the project utilizes twisted CLT panels for both aesthetics and efficiency. Interior spaces vary across floors, offering flexible configurations and adaptable layouts. The Spira Silva challenges conventional skyscraper design, fostering a welcoming atmosphere and promoting sustainable urban living.
