Lumin Wave Pendant

Bronze A' Design Award Winner 2025

Within the formal language of contemporary lighting design, the vertical cylindrical column anchoring this pendant functions as both structural spine and symbolic axis mundi, the world-tree or cosmic pillar that in numerous cultural traditions represents connection between earthly and celestial realms, here domesticated and refined into an intimate scale appropriate for residential environments yet retaining something of that archetypal vertical reaching, the warm-toned wood itself carrying rich symbolic freight across cultures, associated with organic growth, natural authenticity, craft tradition, warmth and welcome in domestic contexts, and the enduring quality of natural materials that age gracefully rather than merely deteriorating. The golden illumination emanating from rectangular apertures at top and bottom suggests the ancient symbolic association of light with knowledge, enlightenment, divine presence, and conscious awareness, here rendered in contemporary technical terms through embedded electrical components yet still activating primordial responses to luminosity as source of comfort, safety, and revelation in darkness, the warm color temperature specifically evoking fire, candlelight, hearth, and the intimate scales of illumination that have accompanied human dwelling since our species first gathered around flames. The three undulating wave-forms projecting from the central column invite interpretation through multiple symbolic frameworks, their sinuous profiles suggesting water in motion, wind made visible, or other natural forces and rhythms, evoking the ancient philosophical concept of nature as dynamic process rather than static being, the Greek panta rhei or everything flows, while their rhythmic alternation along the vertical axis might be understood as visual music, the spacing suggesting breath, heartbeat, or other biological rhythms that structure organic existence, these organic curves emerging from geometric discipline mirror traditional symbolic polarities between nature and culture, wilderness and cultivation, intuition and reason, yet rather than emphasizing opposition, the design celebrates integration and harmonious synthesis. The number three, represented in the triple wave-forms, carries symbolic weight across numerous traditions, from the Christian trinity to the tripartite division of many cosmologies into upper, middle, and lower worlds, the three-fold structure of beginning-middle-end in narrative, and the triangular stability evident in both physical structures and conceptual frameworks, here the threefold repetition with variation creates both unity through similarity and interest through differentiation, embodying principles of theme and variation familiar from musical composition. The material choice of wood, particularly the warm-toned hardwood with visible grain patterns that might be walnut, cherry, or similar species, connects to traditions of craft, making, and the transformation of raw natural material through skilled human intervention into objects of utility and beauty, the visible grain patterns themselves functioning as nature's signature, the growth rings and fiber patterns serving as temporal record of the tree's life and environmental conditions, thus embedding within the object a sense of deep time and organic history even as it serves contemporary needs through modern technology. The pendant's vertical orientation and suspended nature position it as mediating element between ceiling and inhabited space below, functioning symbolically as connector, bridge, or threshold between architectural containment and human activity, while its capacity to emit light positions it as giver, source, and generator of visibility, these functional roles carrying symbolic overtones of provision, care, and the creation of hospitable environment. The wave motifs specifically, with their suggestion of rhythmic alternation and flowing movement, might be understood through various cultural lenses as representing the cyclical nature of existence, the ebb and flow of energy, breath, or life force, concepts found in traditions from Chinese qi to Indian prana to Western vitalism, the forms suggesting dynamic equilibrium rather than static perfection, ongoing process rather than fixed completion, becoming rather than mere being, in this reading the pendant embodies temporal dimension and vital energy even in its material stillness, inviting contemplation of how objects can suggest movement, growth, and organic life through formal means even when they themselves remain motionless, how design can capture and express the dynamic character of natural phenomena through carefully considered shape, proportion, rhythm, and material, creating works that resonate with deep patterns we recognize from our embodied experience of moving through and dwelling within the world.

This lighting design harmoniously blends aesthetics and functionality, taking inspiration from the visual patterns of acoustic waveforms. The refined combination of wood and metal creates a warm yet modern atmosphere. Integrated light modules and dynamic wave-shaped components add visual depth and spatial rhythm. Manufactured with high-quality materials and an innovative structural approach, the design stands out both visually and technically, offering an artistic lighting solution for contemporary interiors.
