Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025
The vertical steel framework in Miyashita's architectural lighting installation operates as a powerful symbol of transformation and renewal, where materials once destined for discard achieve redemption through thoughtful integration into inhabited space. The radial configuration emanating from a central luminous axis echoes archetypal mandala structures found across contemplative traditions, suggesting wholeness, centering, and the organization of chaos into meaningful pattern. Light functioning as the compositional and spiritual center connects to universal associations of illumination with knowledge, consciousness, and transcendence, transforming the utilitarian office environment into a space where the journey upward becomes metaphor for aspiration and elevation of spirit. The recycled steel members, retaining their industrial character while serving new aesthetic purpose, embody concepts of metamorphosis and the dignification of humble materials, resonating with traditions that find beauty in the repurposed and the restored. The geometric complexity of intersecting lines and planes creates a visual language of interconnection and interdependence, suggesting how individual elements achieve significance through relationship rather than isolation. The achromatic palette, stripped of chromatic distraction, focuses attention on fundamental formal relationships of light and shadow, solid and void, structure and space, inviting contemplation of essential rather than superficial qualities. The one-point perspective drawing the eye toward zenith activates associations with spiritual ascent, the axis mundi connecting earthly and celestial realms, transforming quotidian commercial architecture into sacred geometry. The embrace suggested by the title and enacted by the surrounding steel framework evokes archetypes of protection, containment, and nurture, suggesting that even industrial materials arranged with sensitivity might create spaces of genuine human comfort and psychological shelter, where workers experience not merely functional adequacy but spatial generosity that honors human dignity.
Seamlessly blending innovation and sustainability, this office redefines the relationship between architecture and recycled steel. The façade, inspired by stacked billets, expresses material regeneration, while the interior integrates the company's own steel products with precision and elegance. Designed to embody Kyoei Steel’s vision, the space fosters creativity, collaboration, and efficiency, reducing environmental impact while reinforcing the company’s expertise, technological advancements, and unwavering commitment to sustainability and responsible manufacturing.
