Golden A' Design Award Winner 2025
Architectural thresholds and gateway forms carry profound symbolic resonance across human cultures, representing passage between states, transition from profane to sacred space, and the transformative experience of crossing boundaries both physical and metaphorical, and FTA Group's Digital Intelligence Center engages this archetypal vocabulary with contemporary sophistication through its monumental portal composition that frames sky, city, and possibility within its generous aperture. The asymmetry of the twin towers may be understood through traditional symbolism of complementary opposites, the taller left tower suggesting aspiration, ascent, and future orientation while the broader right tower embodies stability, groundedness, and present strength, their connection through the sky-bridge representing synthesis, communication, and the bridging of apparent dualities into functional unity. The terracotta podium structure nested at the base introduces the warmth of earth materials and historical building traditions into dialogue with the crystalline towers above, this material juxtaposition potentially encoding meanings of continuity between heritage and innovation, the grounding of technological advancement in human-scaled tradition. Chromatic symbolism operates powerfully through the captured golden hour light transforming the left tower's facade into gradients of amber and rose, colors traditionally associated with warmth, welcome, vitality, and auspicious energy in numerous cultural traditions, while the cooler blue-gray tones of the right tower suggest clarity, rationality, and technological precision. The rectangular void at the composition's heart functions as both absence and presence, a threshold space that in architectural phenomenology represents potential, invitation, and the liminal moment before transformation, framing views of the urban context beyond as if presenting the future city as destination glimpsed through the gateway of present achievement. The horizontal sky-bridge spanning the towers at height evokes archetypal bridge symbolism of connection, overcoming separation, and enabling passage across previously unbridgeable gaps, suggesting technological and human capacity to unite what might otherwise remain divided, whether disciplines, functions, or communities.
Located in the North Shanghai Hi-Tech Park, the project takes the new smart city as the core, and promotes the renewal of the region from industrialization to intelligence. The emergence of a digital intelligence center from the old factory is meant to bring this place the future productivity. Modern industrial style plants and new high-rise buildings are mixed, creating a 24 hours open, dynamic and diverse gateway.
