24 Solar Terms and Gods Graphic Design

Silver A' Design Award Winner 2025

Chen Zhao's graphic design series operates as a sophisticated visual codex translating ancestral cosmological understanding into contemporary pictographic language, where each figure functions simultaneously as decorative element and cultural vessel carrying accumulated symbolic meaning across generations. The triadic chromatic restriction to red, black, and white invokes traditional associations across numerous cultures: red embodying vitality, celebration, and auspicious energy; black suggesting authority, mystery, and the primordial void from which creation emerges; white representing purity, clarity, and the blank page awaiting inscription. The stylized figures themselves draw upon archetypal forms recognizable across mythological traditions: the celestial bird appearing in various compositions evokes solar symbolism, divine messengers, and the flight between earthly and heavenly realms; robed scholarly figures suggest wisdom keepers and cultural ancestors who preserve and transmit knowledge; hybrid creatures with multiple eyes invoke the omniscience associated with supernatural guardians and the expanded perception attributed to enlightened beings. The systematic organization into twenty-four divisions reflects the traditional agricultural calendar, itself a profound symbolic structure mapping human activity onto cosmic cycles, asserting meaningful correspondence between celestial movements and terrestrial flourishing. Compositionally, the consistent placement of figures against generous negative space suggests the emergence of form from formlessness, order from chaos, the named from the unnamed. The bilingual typography functions symbolically as bridge between heritage and contemporary global discourse, honoring ancestral wisdom while inviting broader engagement. The diagonal arrangement of the poster display creates visual energy suggesting seasonal progression, the continuous turning of the cosmic wheel through which time manifests its eternal return. Each figure, though rendered with graphic economy, carries dense symbolic potential, inviting contemplation of humanity's enduring need to personify natural forces, to find meaning in seasonal transformations, and to maintain connection with ancestral understanding of cosmic order.

This illustration series matches each solar term with its corresponding deity, amplifying their cultural synergy and enriching the cultural connotations. Through typical postures and movements using special instruments, this approach offers a modern reinterpretation of traditional heritage. Scanning the QR code at the bottom right of each illustration grants access to a dedicated website, facilitating further exploration of agricultural lore and divine mythology.
