No Way Out Radiator

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2018

The vertical articulation of Xenofon Hector Grigorelis's NoW.0 Radiator speaks to archetypal associations with ascension, growth, and aspiration, the elongated forms reaching upward in a gesture that transcends mere functionality to suggest spiritual elevation. Within design discourse, vertical emphasis traditionally encodes values of dignity, strength, and forward-looking optimism, making this formal choice particularly resonant for an object intended to provide warmth and comfort within domestic space. The integration of natural wood elements within the metallic structure activates the symbolic dialogue between nature and culture, between organic process and human manufacture, that has occupied design thinking since the Arts and Crafts movement sought to reconcile industrial production with authentic materiality. The amber and walnut tones of the wooden inserts carry associations of hearth, home, and gathered warmth, their presence transforming the radiator from purely mechanical apparatus into a symbolic hearth substitute, the contemporary equivalent of the fire that has served as the gathering center of human dwelling since prehistory. The white coloration of the metal components participates in established associations with purity, clarity, and light itself, positioning the heating element as a source not merely of thermal comfort but of visual luminosity within the interior. The staggered arrangement of vertical elements creates visual rhythm that might be decoded as temporal metaphor, suggesting musical notation or the measured passage of time, appropriate for an object that modulates the thermal experience of inhabited space through seasonal cycles. The ladder-like configuration may evoke associations with transition and connection, the ladder being an ancient symbol of passage between realms, here reimagined as passage between states of thermal comfort. The presentation context reinforces these readings through its material palette of mineral cement and organic timber, establishing a symbolic framework of elemental grounding, the radiator emerging as a mediating presence between earth-derived materials and the atmospheric conditions of inhabited space, embodying the human capacity to shape environment through thoughtful design intervention.

The vertical designed lines are self connected with a special shape and give the object its defined outline. The oversized dimensions 1800X450mm and its shape offer a unique character. Its aluminium metal construction and the ability to use any desired colour, produce a special and commonly acceptable piece of work.
