The symbolic architecture of Nedim Mutevelic's Sfumato Shelving System operates through a sophisticated vocabulary of spatial and material metaphors that resonate with fundamental human experiences of habitation, organization, and the mediation between inner and outer realms. The vertical gradient from enclosed cabinet volumes to open skeletal frameworks enacts an archetypal ascent from earthbound materiality toward aerial lightness, echoing ancient cosmological models that position dense matter below and ethereal spirit above. This graduated dematerialization might be understood as a physical meditation on the sfumato principle, that Renaissance technique of softening boundaries and dissolving hard transitions, here translated from two-dimensional pictorial space into three-dimensional functional form. The rectangular apertures within the frameworks suggest windows, thresholds between interior and exterior that have served across cultures as potent symbols of perception, revelation, and the exchange between private and public domains. Their irregular proportions, eschewing rigid mathematical grids, evoke organic growth patterns, vernacular building traditions, and the accumulated wisdom of structures evolved across generations rather than imposed through singular authoritative vision. The chromatic duality between cool white and warm earth tones activates archetypal associations: white suggesting clarity, purity, and rational order; warm taupe and bronze evoking natural materials, temporal depth, and connection to geological and organic processes. Books and archival materials populating the compartments function as symbols of accumulated knowledge, preserved memory, and the human impulse toward organization and transmission across time. The modular nature of the system, its capacity for varied configuration and expansion, embodies contemporary values of flexibility, adaptability, and personalization, reflecting cultural shifts away from fixed hierarchies toward fluid responsive arrangements. The stepped silhouette profile may evoke urban skylines, mountainous landscapes, or ziggurat architectures, forms that have served across civilizations as markers of collective aspiration and organized ascent.
The dynamic outline of this shelf system evokes the skyline of an urban landscape – spacious and massive at the bottom, broken and fragmented at the top, with a continuous horizontal base. Different configurations and dimensions are realized through the simple combining of the modules. Sfumato is a modular, stand-alone or wall shelf system for your small items. Those you want to exhibit or hide, either with a play of shadows or closed doors.
