Ryad Private Garden

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020

Fernando Pozuelo's Private Garden functions as a sophisticated spatial narrative encoding the archetypal journey toward sanctuary and illumination through its commanding axial organization. The central pathway operates as a threshold symbol, a liminal passage inviting movement from ordinary existence toward a luminous destination embodied by the tower structure that references both the lighthouse guiding travelers and the minaret calling faithful to contemplation. The bilateral symmetry activates deeply rooted human responses to order and balance, suggesting cosmic harmony and rational design underlying apparent natural abundance. Water channels flanking the pathway carry profound cultural resonance across traditions, representing purification, life force, and the boundary between worldly and sacred realms, their reflective surfaces doubling the golden light as mirrors traditionally symbolize truth and self-knowledge. The chromatic dialogue between cool celestial blue and warm terrestrial amber encodes the universal duality of heaven and earth, spirit and matter, aspiration and groundedness, while their harmonious coexistence suggests the garden as a reconciling space where opposites achieve synthesis. Numerological significance emerges in the paired elements, the two lawn panels, the dual water channels, suggesting balance and relationship fundamental to harmonious existence. The mature trees function as axis mundi symbols, vertical connectors between underground roots and aerial canopy, between darkness and light, their dramatic uplighting transforming them into luminous presences suggesting wisdom accumulated through patient growth. Moorish decorative elements reference the paradise garden tradition, the Persian pairidaeza meaning enclosed park, while their intricate geometric patterns encode mathematical relationships believed to reflect divine order underlying creation. The twilight temporal setting itself symbolizes transformation, threshold moments, and the liminal beauty found in transitions rather than fixed states.

The challenge consisted in modernizing an old country house and turns it into a realm of peace and quiet, comprehensively working both on the architectural and landscape areas. The facade was renewed, civil work was did on the pavings and the swimmimg pool and retaining walls were built, creating new forge ironworks for the archways, walls and fences. Gardening, irrigation and the reservoir, as well as lightning, furniture and accessories were also comprehensively delt with.
