Muh Shoou Xixi Hotel

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020

Spatial arrangements within GOA (Group of Architects)'s Muh Shoou Xixi Hotel encode profound symbolic meanings rooted in East Asian landscape philosophy where architecture serves as a mediating presence between human dwelling and natural cosmos. The aerial perspective itself functions as a symbolic viewpoint traditionally associated with enlightened observation, suggesting the transcendent overview of the sage who perceives patterns and relationships invisible from ground level. The interconnected pavilion configuration evokes classical garden architecture principles where buildings unfold sequentially through landscape, creating experiential journeys rather than singular destinations, symbolizing life as processional path rather than fixed arrival. The pitched roof forms reference vernacular building traditions while their contemporary abstraction suggests cultural continuity adapted to present circumstances, embodying the archetypal concept of shelter as protective embrace. Water elements flanking the composition carry layered symbolic resonance including purification, reflection, and the flowing nature of time, while their positioning establishes boundary and threshold conditions marking transitions between realms. The verdant forest canopy symbolizes abundance, renewal, and the nurturing embrace of the natural world, its enveloping presence suggesting return to primordial garden states. The golden horizon light activates solar symbolism associated with illumination, warmth, and cyclical renewal, while its positioning at day's golden hour evokes liminal temporal states rich with contemplative potential. The careful balance between geometric built form and organic natural growth embodies fundamental complementary principles of order and spontaneity, culture and nature, discipline and freedom existing in harmonious dialogue. Circulation paths functioning as connective tissue between pavilions symbolize relationship and community while preserving individual identity, suggesting social philosophy valuing both connection and autonomy.

Muh Shoou originally means the last fruit left by farmers on the tree with the special intention of sharing it with animals in nature so as to pray for the harvest of the coming year. That’s just where the name of Muh Shoou Xixi comes. The architect attempts to present the natural beauty of Xixi Wetland - coldness, quietness, uniqueness, wildness and seclusion - to visitors through the design and evoke the resonance between human and the primitive nature through the architecture. While rambling in the Wetland, it's hidden in the dense forest quietly with poetic aesthetics.
