Borgio Verezzi Residential Bulding

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020

Ascending rhythmic bands of darkness and light encode profound symbolic content within Torres Arquitetos's residential tower, the compositional structure suggesting a ladder or stairway archetype that across countless cultural traditions represents ascent from earthly concerns toward elevated states of being, spiritual progression, and the human aspiration toward transcendence. The tapered silhouette rising from broad base to narrower crown echoes ancient ziggurat and pyramid forms, architectural archetypes expressing the concentration of energy and meaning as one ascends toward apex, while simultaneously suggesting organic growth patterns found in trees and plants that reach toward light. The interplay between dark veined stone and warm illuminated spaces creates visual dialogue between shelter and exposure, interior sanctum and exterior world, private domestic realm and public urban presence, archetypal dualities central to human experience of dwelling. Warm amber light emanating from each residential level functions as beacon symbolism, suggesting hearth and home, the fire that distinguishes human habitation from mere shelter, each glowing band representing accumulated lives and stories stacked vertically in communal urban dwelling. The cream-toned stone base references earth, grounding, foundation, and permanence, materials drawn from geological time providing rootedness for the ascending structure above. Twilight hour captured in the atmospheric context carries liminal significance, the threshold moment between day and night traditionally associated with transformation, reflection, and the thinning of boundaries between ordinary and elevated consciousness. Tree forms framing the composition introduce nature symbolism suggesting organic life, growth, and the integration of built and natural environments that contemporary architectural philosophy increasingly emphasizes. The overall composition may be interpreted as celebrating the archetype of home elevated, domestic shelter transformed into vertical community ascending through atmospheric space toward celestial realms while remaining firmly grounded in material presence and human scale.

Borgio Verezzi is a residential building with twenty-two floors, in the city of Caxias do Sul, in the extreme south of Brazil. The choice for a differentiated residential product was a conviction of the developer and the architectural firm since its earliest studies. Volumetrically, the building is constituted of a vertical monolith of which they were suppressed volumes in their corners where are located their balconies. These balconies are pushed and stretched for a better viewing and sunlight of each plane.
