The ovoid form at the heart of Jaco Roeloffs's installation carries profound archetypal resonance, the egg standing across countless traditions as the primordial symbol of potentiality, creation, and the cosmic origin, the world egg or cosmic egg appearing in Hindu, Egyptian, Greek, and numerous indigenous cosmologies as the vessel from which reality emerges. The superegg's mathematical perfection adds layers of meaning associated with ideal forms and the Platonic realm of pure geometry, suggesting the underlying mathematical order believed by many traditions to structure the universe. The lattice construction, simultaneously enclosing and revealing, may evoke the tension between containment and liberation, the known and mysterious, interior contemplation and external engagement. The hundreds of colored spheres arranged in their orderly yet varied pattern invite interpretation as atoms in molecular structure, stars in constellation, or souls in community, each individual element contributing to a harmonious whole while maintaining distinct identity. The coastal setting activates threshold symbolism, the beach existing as liminal space between terrestrial stability and oceanic flux, between the conscious and unconscious realms in depth psychology. Color itself functions symbolically here, the full spectrum suggesting completeness, unity of diversity, and the integration of all possibilities, while the metallic structure provides the ordering principle that prevents chromatic chaos. The vertical orientation implies aspiration, growth, and connection between earthly and celestial realms, while the rounded form offers feminine receptivity and protection. The transparency of the structure may suggest that truth and beauty require openness rather than opacity, revelation rather than concealment.
Superegg represents the rapid multiplying of single use coffee capsules, which symbolises human convenience and its impact on the environment. Appearing levitated above ground, the textured geometric superegg shape, as documented by mathematician Gabriel Lame, is dotted with random discarded coffee capsules arranged into perfect lines. The visceral experience engages the viewer from all angles and distances. Over 3000 capsules were collected via a call to action on social media and the local community. Superegg allows the viewer to peruse waste and encourages new recycling habits.
