Zhang Jinyu's architectural intervention encodes profound symbolic meaning through its deliberate zoomorphic reference, the whale form operating as a multivalent vessel of spiritual significance across maritime cultures worldwide, representing wisdom, guidance through emotional depths, communication across vast distances, and the mysterious boundary between the seen surface world and the unseen realm beneath the waves. The parabolic curve ascending toward the heavens may evoke aspirational spiritual ascent, the gesture of reaching upward suggesting transcendence while the protective enclosure beneath offers sanctuary and return to sheltered safety, creating a symbolic dialectic between cosmic aspiration and earthly refuge. The threshold condition established by the glass membrane between interior and exterior can be read as an architectural meditation on liminal space, the boundary between known and unknown, familiar and infinite, self and cosmos, inviting contemplation of permeability between states of being. The volcanic black sand setting introduces associations with primordial creation, the raw material of earth's formation, suggesting beginnings and the fundamental elements from which life emerges, while the ocean horizon beyond represents the limitless, the eternal return, and the ultimate dissolution of individual form into universal unity. The weathered exterior surface speaks to acceptance of temporal processes, the dignity of aging, and the beauty of authentic material response to environmental forces, while the warm interior timber suggests human warmth, crafted care, and the transformation of natural material through cultural intention. The processional pier extending toward water establishes ritualized approach, the linear path leading toward encounter with the sacred, echoing pilgrimage traditions across spiritual practices. The birds in flight may symbolize the soul's freedom, messenger figures, or simply the living presence of the natural world within which this sacred space exists. The number and arrangement of seating within suggests community gathering, shared witness, and collective spiritual practice, the orientation toward the horizon establishing unified contemplative direction.
The bionic form of the whale became the language of this chapel. A whale stranded on the coast of Iceland. A person can enter its body through a low fishtail and experience the perspective of a whale looking at the ocean where is easier for humans to reflect on the neglect of environmental degradation. The supporting structure falls on the beach to ensure minimal damage to the natural environment. Natural and environmentally friendly materials make this project a tourist destination that calls for environmental protection.
