Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020
The packaging system created by Laurent Hainaut operates through layered symbolic registers that communicate heritage, craftsmanship, temporal depth, and celebratory occasion through carefully orchestrated visual codes. The woven petate band functions as perhaps the most potent signifier within this design vocabulary, its interlaced pattern connecting to ancestral traditions of fiber arts while simultaneously suggesting the patient interweaving of time itself, each strand representing years of careful aging and the accumulated wisdom of master craftspeople. Gold as the dominant accent color carries its universal associations with preciousness, solar warmth, achievement, and celebration, while its specific application in flowing linear motifs evokes natural growth patterns, suggesting organic processes and the unhurried rhythms of traditional production methods. The gradient transition from light to dark across the presentation tube surface may be interpreted as a visual metaphor for the aging process itself, moving from the brightness of new spirit through deepening complexity toward the rich darkness of mature character, this progression inviting contemplation of transformation through time. The bottle's curved silhouette speaks to bodily associations of containment and nourishment, its rounded shoulder suggesting generous abundance while the elegant neck implies refinement and careful dispensation. Typography choices establish dual registers of authority and intimacy, the flowing script suggesting personal handwriting and individual authentication while structured supporting text provides institutional credibility and informational transparency. The smoke-like atmospheric effects surrounding the objects in their photographic presentation activate associations with ritual ceremony, incense, and the ephemeral nature of sensory pleasure, positioning the act of opening and consuming as participation in something transcending mere refreshment. The overall symbolic architecture constructs meaning around themes of heritage continuity, patient craft, natural material integrity, and the elevation of everyday consumption into ceremonial significance.
forceMAJEURE Design was asked to bring the Reserva Limitada liquid to life through the packaging. The brown label with rich gold foil lettering complements the amber and golden hues of the liquid. The signature petate band, handwoven in special colors for this edition by local Guatemalan craftswomen, proudly wraps around the bottle. For the canister, designers blended washes of colors and textures inspired by the lush Guatemalan landscape. The petate band, as well as the Master Blender’s signature band with tasting notes, are recreated on the canister in a gold graphic interpretation.
